A skin-sparing mastectomy involves the removal of underlying glandular breast tissue, as well as the nipple areola, while preserving the remaining breast skin. This is a commonly utilized approach to mastectomy. Though the nipple areola resides on the surface of the breast, it is intimately associated with underlying breast tissue. Depending on your breast surgeon’s recommendations, the nipple areola may need to be removed along with the remaining breast tissue. Unlike traditional mastectomy, which involves the removal of a large portion of the central breast skin, the skin-sparing technique preserves most of the normal breast skin. This procedure can potentially allow the final outcome of breast reconstruction to have a more natural contour with the possibility of less visible scarring. Learn More about Skin-sparing Mastectomy.
Among the different types of mastectomy procedures, many patients prefer the nipple-sparing technique. However, it is important to note that not everyone is a suitable candidate for this approach. The nipple-sparing mastectomy takes the skin-sparing mastectomy one step further; in addition to preserving the normal breast skin, the nipple areola is also preserved. Breast reconstruction following a nipple-sparing mastectomy can produce aesthetically pleasing results that appear natural, as the nipple doesn’t have to be reconstructed at a later stage. Your breast surgeon can help you determine if you meet the criteria that would ensure that you may safely proceed with nipple-sparing mastectomy. Learn More about Nipple-sparing Mastectomy.
Prophylactic mastectomy involves removal of a healthy breast as a preventive measure that can dramatically decrease the risk of developing breast cancer. Unilateral prophylactic mastectomy is typically done in the setting of breast cancer when a woman decides to remove the healthy breast in addition to the breast that has cancer. Bilateral prophylactic mastectomies are done for women that are at high risk of developing breast cancer, including those who have tested positive for a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation. With quality breast reconstruction procedures available, and immediate breast reconstruction an option in most cases, the decision to proceed with prophylactic mastectomy can be made easier. If you are considering prophylactic mastectomy as a form of prevention, our plastic surgeons can counsel you on your options. Learn More about Prophylactic Mastectomy and the BRCA Gene.
