On 10 July, Dr. Theodore Goldman with Northwell Health began his presentation by asking the participants, “Who in this room has been diagnosed with cancer?” All hands went up, including his; and from that moment on, the women felt a special connection from his candor and warmth.
I have known Dr. Goldman for more than 20 years, both professionally and personally, but this was the first time I had encountered him in this type of setting. I knew he was caring and intelligent, but what a phenomenal teacher! He brought such clarity to so many of the delicate issues of femininity and sexuality discussed during our latest Be Informed Lecture Series. From dealing with physical changes and side effects related to chemotherapy (or early menopause) and how it can affect intimacy, Dr. Goldman facilitated an understanding of the anatomy and how the latest advances in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery could help women maintain their femininity while reducing pain and discomfort.
It is both an overwhelming and a daunting task to siphon out the abundance of information on the internet. Once having heard “You have cancer,” most individuals are on a quest for discovering ways to protect themselves. Having accurate information, as was provided by Dr. Goldman, allows these women to make informed choices and subsequently serves to quiet the mind. Here are a few of the responses to Dr. Goldman’s presentation:
“Dr. Goldman spoke from the heart…his commitment to education and patient care was so very evident. I adore my gynecologist, but Dr. Goldman was spectacular!”
“He had me within the first minute when he shared his personal and family story – instantly human!”
“I came with list of issues I hoped would be addressed and received SO much more. Fantastic!”
“I was so very much taken with Dr. Goldman’s authenticity…Thank you, Dr. Goldman for this gift.”
We are most grateful to Dr. Goldman who joins the many specialists who so generously donate their time to share their expertise. These Be Informed presentations offer a very rare opportunity for our patients to have personal and meaningful interactions with health professionals. We congratulate Dr. Goldman on his new role with Northwell Health as the Associate Chair for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery and Co-Director of the AAGL accredited fellowship program in that same specialty. He has been a pioneer in advanced surgical techniques and committed to patient care in his OB/GYN practice.
