After a person learns they have cancer, they can become overtaken by a flood of emotions. While our practice provides tools to assist our patients’ ability to cope with their physical and emotional hardships during their journey, some people have their own techniques that can help them through their journey.
One terrific example of a patient drawing from their inner strength is Dr. David Light’s patient Laya who used her inner Unicorn spirit to escape the emotional valleys of her breast cancer journey. Magical creatures, Unicorns are known to be universally beautiful, mysterious and difficult to capture or tame. The legend goes that the Unicorn will always show you that there is a way through, even when facing a solid wall.
Breast cancer can’t capture this Unicorn
After her mastectomy, Laya inducted Dr. Light into the Unicorn Squad with a ceremonial crowning of the horn. She wrote this afterward:
Thank you, Dr. Light, for making my big day a little better. Thank you for being a good sport and putting on that unicorn horn for me! I never thought that at 40 years old I would be diagnosed with breast cancer. Through this experience and your practice, I have learned that it is very important to have a strong team by your side. I am so grateful for the work that you and your team do. I don't think I could have asked for a better plastic surgeon than you. Your big heart and positive energy are making my new "normal" a lot easier to embrace.
