Several months ago, we formed The Oasis Group to address the needs of our breast surgery patients who encounter a recurrence of breast cancer or a new cancer diagnosis following their breast reconstruction. While the number of patients from the practice who this effects is extremely small, I felt that it was especially important to provide an opportunity for them to have the support from other patients who have a fuller understanding of the emotional responses and needs in this context.
Given the rigors of various treatment schedules and physical status, it was critical to offer a way for participation even if an individual were unable to attend the group in person. Thanks to the wonders of the digital world, I held the first Skype session yesterday! It filled my heart to be able to facilitate the connection of these women who were nourished by what each shared.
One of the online participants shared the following:
"This Oasis group is a priceless opportunity for me to receive validation and support while dealing with all of the issues that cancer recurrence brings. The honesty, strength and courage shared by my sister survivors is a precious gift that I will cherish forever."
I feel so very fortunate to be part of a practice of physicians who recognize the importance of attending to the emotional needs of their patients and allow me to provide tools as part of their treatment.
