“I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)…”
Those words of American poet e.e. Cummings were close to my heart this weekend as I walked 45 miles over 2 days for breast cancer in the AVON 39 San Francisco Walk. I started the journey by holding close to me the incredible women with whom I have the privilege of working with the words “Sisterhood of Support” on my back. This, my eighth trek, was in honor of all of YOU.
San Francisco greeted us with unusually warm weather as we climbed the daunting hills, crossed over the Golden Gate Bridge, through Sausalito and Mill Valley and camped out overnight in Corte Madera. The second day was as glorious and the 2000+ participants were exhilarated, aside from many blisters and sore calves. The walkers ranged from ages 16-83! As always, the San Jose Bike Patrol accompanied the walkers with great music, enthusiasm and support…and some were sporting tutus!
One very inspiring part of the event was the sharing of stories from the “thrivers.” The thrivers, approximately 175 of the participants, were women and men with breast cancer – some in the process of chemotherapy or radiation, and some having completed their treatment – trekking up and down the hills. Whether they were able to walk 5 miles or the entire route, they were champions.
The participants raised more than $4.6 million and the monies were awarded to research, treatment for uninsured women, transportation for medical care, and assisting with basic needs.
I share this story because I feel very blessed to be able to work with all of you, and I feel we make a lasting impact on each other’s lives. Also, I think it is symbolic of the type of care and support the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, PC practice extends to its patients. The doctors’ and my care knows no boundaries. It extends beyond the walls of our offices to wherever we feel we can provide meaningful support. I thank you all for sharing your journey with me.
(N.P. They bill the event as 39.3 miles. No way! We’ve clocked it at 45 miles.)
