On Thursday evening, Drs. Feingold, Israeli, Korn, and Light and many of the staff attended the Lean On Me Gala: This Magic Moment. Emotions ran high throughout the evening. Those of us in attendance were there because of our admiration for Dr. Dwight DeRisi and his lovely wife, Donna, and in support of the wonderful things the Lean on Me Breast Cancer Network does for people touched with breast cancer.
The three honorees for the gala were Dr. Robert Weiner, Dr. Bruce Kappel, and Gerald Goldstein, Esq. And the big surprise of the night was when special guest, actor Steve Guttenberg, presented Donna DeRisi with the first Lifetime Achievement Award. She was shocked, of course, but she is so deserving of the recognition for her 15 years of dedication to the Lean On Me Foundation. To cap off the evening, Jay Black, from the original Jay and the Americans, gave his traditional performance – amazing at age 76.
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, PC applauds the commitment of this foundation and is proud to sponsor the many efforts and services it provides to women and men diagnosed with breast cancer. The Lean on Me Breast Cancer Network Inc. is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. In 2000, it was established as a non-profit organization by Dr. Dwight DeRisi, Donna DeRisi, Sharon Pape, Ursula Thall, and the late Gerry Accardo. The organization's goal is to provide one-on-one support for women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer by pairing them with volunteer survivors from among the patients of each individual’s practice. In 2014, they matched 100 newly diagnosed patients.
To date, the Lean on Me peer support program has trained over eighty volunteers and has helped thousands of patients, both women and men. Since its inception, the Lean on Me Breast Cancer Network Inc. has expanded its programs and services and now includes several forums for education and support.
