Watch Philadelphia’s WFMZ 69 News discuss the dramatic story of how a woman’s botched breast procedure led to double mastectomy and breast reconstruction. As part of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ new public education campaign on the importance of choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon, a breast reconstruction patient of Dr. Ron Israeli, of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, PC and NY Breast Reconstruction Alliance (NYBRA), is featured in the group's public service announcement.
The segment illustrates that there are too many painful examples of patients being duped by imposters posing as ‘cosmetic surgeons.’ Dr. Israeli's patient originally went to an imposter when she was younger to inquire about breast augmentation. What she got was silicone injected her breasts and then severe lumps developed underneath her skin which made it impossible to monitor her breasts - via physical examination or mammogram - for breast cancer. To make certain she would not get cancer, she consulted a board-certified plastic surgeon in Dr. Israeli and chose to have preventative double mastectomy followed by bilateral breast reconstruction.
Her cautionary tale highlights the importance of always doing your homework when considering plastic surgery and choosing a highly-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure the safest outcome. To identify a board-certified plastic surgeon, be sure to look for certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
